Farewell messages from Members.

Les Girling:

When Maddy and I moved to Heathfields Way in Shaftesbury in 1976 and were moving into our house Beryl Reid appeared on our doorstep with a tray of tea and that was our first meeting. We soon became friends and I introduced Mike to RT circa 1977/78. He was at that time approaching 40 years of age and of course we still had a 40-age limit, so he was a late Tabler. He never took office in Table, but was an active and supportive member. He was involved in organising the National Caravan Rally at Motcombe.

Mike was always busy building his business and was a really nice, kind, genuine family man. He adored his 2 children Samantha and Steve, and Steve joined him in his business. He was very proud of Samantha's son Rowan, who is a police officer in Bristol. Mike never smoked or drank in the 46 years that I knew him and it is tragic that he died of a lung disease.

One of his passions was sailing model boats and he always loved his fast cars. When we first met, he had a Cortina 1600E, and prior to starting his own business was involved with racing driver Dave Brodie in running an electrical business on Longmead Estate, Shaftesbury. In Feb 1978 Shaftesbury was cut off by snow blizzards and Mike and I walked through the snow to Cowards dairy in Lower Blandford Road pulling a sledge to get milk for others.

Mike Perry:

I was in Table with Mike and we left for 41 Club at the same time. I have very little to add other than that he was always a very conscientious and loyal member. He was also a model family man dedicated to his wife Beryl, his children and grandchildren. As he was teetotal, he was always willing to drive to functions so that others could indulge. He very kindly stored, at his work premises, all Ladies Circles and Tangents crockery and cutlery.
