John J O’Rourke – Manchester & Stockport 41 Club

It is with much regret that Manchester & Stockport 41 Club announces the death on the morning of 8th April, of one of its members, John J O’Rourke.

John was a former police officer, serving with both Cheshire and Greater Manchester police forces after failing to qualify to serve with the Garda Siochana due to him being not quite tall enough.

He arrived in Chester to start his police career a day early and unfortunately there were no official available for that night, so he had to spend his first night with Cheshire Police force in a vacant cell.

On moving to the Stockport area, he joined Stockport Round Table 374 in the mid-1970s and left in 1979 on reaching 40.

He then joined Manchester & Stockport 41 Club, in which he was twice Chairman and treasurer for many years.

On retiring from the police force, he became a very active member of the Greater Manchester Police’s Male Voice Choir and was also their treasurer.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
